OwnNode Privacy Policy
OwnNode is an Android app for monitoring a Raspberry Pi through a self-hosted backend. This Privacy Policy explains what OwnNode stores, how it communicates, and what data is under your control.
Information OwnNode stores
OwnNode stores the following information locally on your Android device:
- The backend base URL you configure
- The backend authentication token you configure, encrypted using Android Keystore
- Your media-backup preferences and upload checkpoint, when enabled
- Normalized transaction details, review corrections, and safe sync diagnostics in an Android-Keystore-encrypted queue, when transaction sync is enabled
- Cached widget state derived from backend responses
Information OwnNode transmits
OwnNode sends requests only to the backend address you configure. These requests may include:
- Authenticated telemetry requests to read Raspberry Pi status
- Authenticated Wake-on-LAN requests when you use the Wake PC action
- Photos and videos you authorize Android to make available, only when you enable media backup
- Normalized transaction fields that you review and approve, only when you explicitly sync them
SMS transaction processing
If you explicitly enable transaction capture and grant SMS permission, OwnNode processes future incoming SMS messages on your device to identify financial transaction alerts. It does not read existing inbox history. OTP, failed, pending, promotional, and balance-only messages are ignored. The complete SMS body is not stored and is never sent to OwnNode Agent, Firebase, or Actual Budget. Only a normalized transaction that you review and approve can be sent to your configured self-hosted backend.
Personal data
OwnNode does not require an OwnNode account and does not intentionally collect your name, contacts, or location. If you enable media backup, the app processes the photos and videos you authorize solely to upload them to the self-hosted backend you configured. If you enable transaction capture, the app processes future financial SMS alerts as described above.
Analytics and advertising
OwnNode does not include advertising SDKs. It uses Google Firebase Analytics for aggregate app-usage measurement and Firebase Crashlytics for crash diagnostics. Depending on the platform and Firebase configuration, these services may process app interactions, crash traces, app and device metadata, and identifiers used for analytics or diagnostics. OwnNode does not intentionally send backend tokens, backend passwords, SMS bodies, normalized transaction fields, or user media to Firebase. Data sharing
OwnNode does not sell your data or share it for advertising. Google processes analytics and crash-diagnostic data as a service provider. Feature data visible in the app otherwise comes from, or is sent to, the backend you operate or choose to connect to.
Backend responsibility
OwnNode is designed to work with a self-hosted backend. Data handling on that backend, including logs, access controls, backups, or network exposure, is controlled by the backend operator.
Security
OwnNode is intended to be used with a private backend over a trusted LAN, Tailscale, or an HTTPS endpoint. The app restricts cleartext HTTP configuration to private-network addresses. You are responsible for protecting the backend token and keeping the service private.
Children
OwnNode is not directed to children and is intended as a technical utility application.
Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated from time to time. The latest version will be published at the same URL where this policy is hosted.
